I am helping a friend with genealogical research and have been trying to find any relatives that survived WWII. After a search on one site, I found one person where under 'last residence', this was written:

Berlin SO 36, Mariannenstr. 29

Does this mean it is 29 Mariannen Street in Berlin and if so,what does SO 36 mean? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Also just called Berlin 36, or Kreuzberg 36 is the historical Name of the Berlin Postal address system Südost (south east) 36. Also a Part of central Berlin. After starting the 4 digit Zip Code system in 1961, it became 1000 Berlin 36

Since 93 Germany has a 5 Digit Zip code System.

So the Address changed zip wise after that.

I guess the deutsche Post would still find the Address

And you are right about the Street part.

Germans have the Zip code before the town and the House Number after the street.

Hope I could help..
